Yeah I know that sounds like something out in left field for most people even those with autism. So let me explain. We autistic live in a messed up world and have to make the best of it. So that means figuring out how to work with our brains to make day to day life easier. That my friends is the purpose of this blog. tips and tricks on how to work with our brains instead of against it.
You see meltdowns can be avoided though that takes seeing and understanding how your brain works instead of seeing it thru a non autistic persons eyes. At times this is easier said than done since most of us process the world differently and getting non autistic things to work for us can drive one batty.
Ok so where to start?
Start with acknowledging that your brain works differently and that you need to embrace a different system.
Ok so for my first tip. Get a huge dry erase board.
They are simple to get-Amazon or dollar tree- and there are a rainbows worth of markers to use and paints-yes there are dry erase paints this I had no idea about till I looked for a board for myself. So off to one side of the board make a map key. Basically take different colored markers and either use different shapes or different colors to indicate what shape/color means. For example a gold star mean an appointment or special task.
Now this does mean that you need to understand things that go on during a typical day/week/month for you so before it goes on the board take a notebook page and write out to the best of your ability things that happen during a typical day/week/month. Remember that you can and should ask those that interact with you on a daily bases for help with this task if you feel that your missing something from your list. Also please remember that this is not a task to pressure yourself to be done in a single day. If you need to then take a whole week to do this. life happens and this tip is to try and help you not pressure you in any shape or form.
Also remember that this is your dry erase board so add personal touches to the edges or stickers in the corners. Please leave plenty of room in the middle obviously for your various lists, tasks, and reminders. A suggestion is to make a weekly grid so your not trying to remember what day of the week it is.
If anyone has other tips related to this one feel free to let me know so I can update and expand this article. Thanks for reading!
